Sound Engine As opposed to other popular sound generators, the sound engine has been developed by a wind instrument player. Most others are made by keyboard players. Hence, those are usually intended for keyboard playing. They will typically not sound very natural unless they are treated by extensive and time-consuming MIDI editing. Many playing techniques are not even available when playing them intuitively in real-time with a wind controller. Key switches (invented by keyboard players) are NOT the way to go! Even then you cannot change e.g. the attack sound quality or type spontaneously note by note . . . . . . those modules always use the same attack from the same sample on each of the same note. Then another repeating (but different) attack on another note, etc. This kind of exact repetition of attacks and legato transitions makes an instrument sound quite static and boring. Keyboard players do not really know what a saxophone, flute or oboe, etc. can do or not! So they imitate one type of sound without giving you the control to actually change it – as you can do on the acoustic counterpart. Not so here! You get perfect control over dynamics/sound, articulations, vibrato, additional techniques like growl, multiphonics or overblowing and much more. This allows you to play in real-time as you would on an acoustic horn. Everything you hear in the demos (including the vast number of variations in articulations) is played mostly with only with breath and pitchbend. The vibrato works perfectly with breath the same way it works on acoustic winds. Flutter tongue is naturally executed with your tongue. False fingerings can be done easily by using pitchbend. Other necessary controls can be remapped from any of the available controls on your instrument, like e.g. bite control, or anything else that is available on your instrument. This is possible per patch, since a trumpet patch needs different controls than a violin. The modules use real-time sample manipulations that are reproducing what is happening during acoustic sound production. Then they are translated for manipulating the samples in the same "acoustic like" way. The user interface lets you even edit the behavior to your personal liking! The DynaSample sound modules are the only ones that use this type of an "acoustic" approach - while using sample that simply sound better than physical modeling. This makes their playability absolutely unique. Of course, playing like this requires practicing (like any instrument). But it also demands different and new playing techniques compared to how woodwinds, brass or string instruments play. Most of these techniques work only with the DynaSample instruments. Once you know them and have practiced them, playing feels like an acoustic instrument and no longer like a limited MIDI sax toy. Now it's your turn to make music with it!
The DynaSample XpressO and XO-mini are the only sound modules on the market that were made from the ground up for wind controllers. They use the same excellent sound engine of their big brother XPression (discontinued) and have the same outstanding sample library including the great sounding and responsive analog modeling synthesizer that can be played on its own or combined with the samples for added sonic richness. Now playing top quality instruments is more affordable than ever! The limitation of the XpressO / XO-mini in comparison to the XPression is only in the voice count (2 plus 6 aux voices) and the IN/OUT options (1 stereo out, no line in, 2 foot pedal, 4 foot switches). All functions (including the graphical patch editor) of the XPression are available now even with the outstanding polyphonic power of the XPression . The XO-mini has no digital SPDIF out or mic control input.
